The arts have the power to bring people together, spark conversations, and create meaningful change. But behind every thriving arts organization is a dedicated team working tirelessly to keep the lights on and the creativity flowing. Today, we’re chatting with Lillie, a key figure at the Arkansas Cinema Society (ACS), about their mission, their impact, and the creative ways they’ve successfully fundraised to keep the arts alive in their community.

Q: Tell us about the mission of Arkansas Cinema Society?

Lillie: Absolutely! ACS was founded in 2017 to build a film community in Arkansas by nurturing filmmakers and film lovers alike. We believe in the power of storytelling and want to make high-quality film programming accessible to everyone, no matter where they live in the state. Our goal is to provide opportunities for education, networking, and showcasing work while keeping the experience inclusive and inspiring.

Q: What are some of the biggest successes ACS has had in empowering the arts?

Lillie: One of our proudest achievements has been the Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls, which offers hands-on training, mentorship, and support for young women interested in film. We’ve seen participants go on to create amazing work, and many have even pursued careers in the industry. It’s not just about teaching technical skills; it’s about fostering confidence and showing young filmmakers that their voices matter.

Q: Nonprofits often struggle with fundraising. Can you share a unique approach ACS has taken that really worked?

Lillie: Fundraising is definitely a challenge, but creativity helps! One of our favorite events is “Filmland,” our annual film festival that blends screenings with behind-the-scenes conversations with industry professionals. We’ve been lucky to host filmmakers like Jeff Nichols, Jessica Chastain, and Colman Domingo, and those engaging, intimate discussions help drive community involvement and financial support.

Q: Any advice for other arts nonprofits looking to sustain themselves and grow?

Lillie: Focus on community-building. If people feel personally connected to your mission, they’re more likely to donate, volunteer, or spread the word. Also, don’t be afraid to try something unexpected—whether it’s a quirky fundraiser or a new way to engage your audience. And finally, storytelling isn’t just for the films we showcase; it’s how we make an emotional case for why our work matters. Make sure people see the impact you’re having!

Q: Last question—what’s one film that always inspires you?

Lillie: Oh, that’s tough! But I’d have to say Singin’ in the Rain. It’s such a beautiful love letter to movies, and it reminds me why we do what we do—to bring people together through film and storytelling.

Nonprofits like ACS prove that the arts can thrive even in tough times with a little ingenuity, passion, and community support. If you’re inspired by their work, consider supporting them—or your own local arts organization. Because in a world that sometimes feels like a never-ending disaster movie, we all need a little more storytelling magic.
